The Schildkröt Company has been founded 1873 in Mannheim (Germany). From 1896 on the first celluloid dolls have been manufactured and the tortoise has been applied for a trade-mark. Thus Schildkröt is the eldest still today producing doll manufacturer of Germany. Now already since 1896 until today uninterruptedly dolls are manufactured.
Schildkröt's manufacturing plants were in Mannheim until 1975, later near Munich and then in Kaufbeuren/Allgau. After Germany's reunification the enterprise has been moved to Rauenstein in Thuringia.
The actually manufactured assortment is comprising the classic collection, these are dolls which in earlier years have been manufactured of celluloid. Duplicates of a number of these old original models are made, always in a limited edition of 10 - 20.000 pieces worldwide per doll model with certificate.
The trade-mark Schildkröt now as before is the most-known doll-mark in Germany. Today the assortment has changed and it became an exclusive mark It isn't longer a mass production but instead of it the duplicate editions of earlier years and very beautiful new designed dolls. The collectors' circle of Schildkröt dolls is very wide in Germany, therefore also the editions of between 10-and 20.000 pieces per model since otherwise the offer would be to small for the collector and a lot of collectors couldn't get a doll.
